Can a Jeep Renegade Tow a Camper Trailer? Towing Capacity

Can a Jeep Renegade Tow a Camper Trailer? Towing Capacity

When planning a road trip, or a camping vacation with the Jeep Renegade, one may be concerned about the towing capacity of the Jeep Renegade. Can a Jeep Renegade tow a camper trailer? What is the towing capacity of the jeep renegade? These questions are just the tip of the iceberg when it concerns towing in the Renegade.

The Jeep Renegade can safely tow a camper trailer that is less than 2000 pounds. This includes most small camper trailers, compact camper trailers, and featherweight trailers. Without an included towing package, the towing weight limit will be decreased.

Towing any trailer behind a Jeep Renegade presents its challenges. The Renegade is rated across its various sub-models to pull a maximum of two thousand pounds. However, most models do not include a towing package as part of the deal when purchasing. Newer four-wheel-drive models offer a towing package already installed, leaving many questions for two-wheel-drive owners concerning towing.

How big of a Camper can a Jeep Renegade pull?

A Jeep Renegade has a towing capacity of two thousand pounds. As long as the trailer and camper combination is less than two thousand pounds, the Jeep Renegade will easily pull that camper.

The Jeep Renegade can tow anything less than two thousand pounds, such as:

  • Skiffs
  • Ski boats
  • Campers
  • Camper Trailers
  • Travel Trailers
  • Cargo Trailers

Do not forget to include the cargo weight of contents for the camper in the calculations. The trailer weight is separate from the camper, or if the camper is a travel trailer, there may be other weight considerations.

Popular Trailers that can Be Towed by a Jeep renegade Include:

  • Jay Feather Micro
  • Alto Teardrop
  • Bean Trailers
  • U-Haul Travel Trailers

When looking at a camper that a Renegade will tow easily, the best solution is to stay within the featherweight class of travel trailers. These trailers range in weight from a few hundred pounds (around 500) upwards of thirty-five hundred pounds empty. There is no standard cut-off, as every dealer will classify the featherweight trailers slightly differently.

There are smaller one-person travel trailers that do not pack a lot of weight. These conversion trailers usually do not include a sleeping area but are perfect for a day trip to the beach. In addition, they come equipped with a cooktop, food storage, and gear storage.

Can you put a Trailer on a Jeep Renegade?

Pulling a trailer on a Jeep Renegade is easy to calculate. First, the trailer weight and cargo within the trailer must be less than the towing capacity for the Jeep Renegade (Two thousand pounds, source: jeep.com).

One must be sure that the trailer is correctly attached with the proper towing gear to ensure a safe journey to the destination.

How to Adjust the Tongue Weight

The tongue weight is a measurement of balance. Think of how a semi-truck must balance the cargo in the trailer regarding the amount of weight each axle is towing.

The tongue of the trailer hitch carries the connection between the Jeep and the cargo. Therefore, it is safe to assume that the weight on the tongue of the trailer hitch is not the entire weight being towed.

The tongue weight measures how balanced the load is inside the one or two-axle trailer. Trailers with only one axle have an easier time adjusting the tongue weight as the cargo only needs to be shifted to one side of the axle or the other to change the tongue weight.

Adjusting the Tongue weight on a Two Axle Trailer

The two-axle trailer has two pivot points that the cargo rests on, the front and rear axles. The idea is to keep the load balanced between the two axles; naturally, one would want to put heavier bulky items close to the center or rear of the trailer. However, this simple formula will help make any adjustments needed to the weight.

To reduce the tongue weight, shift the cargo towards the trailer’s rear to increase the cargo’s forward shift. Keeping the heaviest items on the center of the rear axle will almost certainly guarantee a tongue weight within the nine to fifteen percent range.

Can all Jeep Renegades tow?

The Jeep Renegade was not designed with towing in mind; however, the Renegade does have aftermarket towing accessories that help convert the Renegade into a towing vehicle.

Unfortunately, the Jeep Renegade does not come standard with any tow packages. A good trailer hitch conversion kit would run anywhere between five hundred to one thousand dollars for complete installation from a third party.

The exception to the rule is the twenty twenty-two Jeep renegade, which has the option to add a tow package from the dealership. The tow package is available on the Renegade four-wheel drive models. The two-wheel drive models still have the same capabilities as towing but do not come with a factory-installed towing package.

The Importance of Trailer Brakes with the Jeep Renegade

It can be tempting to only connect the hitch and disregard the trailer brake setup for a few day trips. Especially if one is purchasing the towing kit and doing a self-installation.

However, it would be highly unwise to do so. The trailer brake system is part of the towing capacity rating. Two thousand pounds of mass pushing against a vehicle trying to stop stopping is more complicated.

Towing Without a Trailer Brake

The maximum weight that any vehicle can tow without a trailer brake is about fifteen hundred pounds. This is not a safety measurement to give permission; it is a warning to Jeep Owners that things can go wrong quickly without properly installing a towing package for anything over fifteen hundred pounds.

Renegade owners quickly become confused when talking about trailer brake capacity and towing capacity. The two measurements are not mutually exclusive. The trailer brake capacity must always be higher than the towing capacity.

How Much Does a Jeep Renegade pull?

The maximum that a Jeep Renegade can pull is two thousand pounds, including the trailer and cargo weight. One must also ensure that the load is balanced and the tongue weight does not exceed fifteen percent of the total weight of the trailer load.

For a Two thousand pound trailer, it is three hundred pounds. The cargo in the trailer would need to be adjusted to fit Jeep’s parameters.
